New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs Regulates all IntraState moving and storage, commercial goods, and special commodoties.
New Jersey Rules and Regulations
The New Jersey Divison of Consumer Affairs regulates all intrastate moves (from point A to point B in New Jersey). The mover must file their tariff with the New Jersey Consumer Affairs. This tariff specifies all of the services, charges, terms and conditions for the movers, and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs holds all movers responsible for following by their published rates, policies, and procedures.
Moving companies can charge hourly, by mileage, or flat rate, depending on what is in their tariff. The New Jersey Tariff Bureau (Department of the New Jersey Warehousemens Association) has come up with a joint tariff of published rates for all of its members that are part of the New Jersey Warehousemen’s Association. Movers must meet the requirements of the FTC and the rules and regulations for the state of New Jersey moving companies (who provide service as a public mover and or warehouseman) between one point in New Jersey to another point in New Jersey.
Intrastate movers are also required to have license # on their vehicles PM # if they are moving, a PC # if they are doing storage, and a PW # license for warehousing only.
One important thing to remember is that you make sure your local mover carries workers compensation insurance and the proper licensing on equipment and vehicles.
If you have any questions on licensing or moving companies, you may visit the mover’s section for frequently asked questions: www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/pmovers/movfaq2.htm , or to find out if your moving company has the proper operating authority feel free to call the:
