The Missouri Department of Transportation-Motor Carriers Division regulates household movers. The mover must publish their tariff with the Missouri Department of Transportation-Motor Carriers Division. This tariff outlines all the services and charges for the movers, and the Missouri Department of Transportation-Motor Carriers Division holds all movers responsible for following by their published rates, policies, and procedures.
Motor Carriers Services Division handles the regulations for all licensed movers in the state of Missouri. There are no tariff requirements on a commercial zone (1 mile plus 1 mile for every 50,000 of population). If outside the commercial zone, moves are priced by weight and distance, and there is a prescribed minimum and maximum that movers can charge. As for hourly up till August 31, 2009 they will be required to have their hourly rates in their tariff for the commercial zone. St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson County are is considered in a commercial zone.
An exemption exists for moves within 25 miles of the mover’s location. The mover must have the “exception” rates approved by the MoDOT through a 5 point justification process. The mover must prove that the rates don’t undermine the existing tariff and that they cover the mover’s costs.
One important thing to remember is that you make sure you local mover carries workers compensation insurance and the proper licensing on equipment and vehicles.
