Minnesota Department of Transportation regulates household movers. The moving company is required to be licensed and insured. The mover must publish a tariff with the Department of Transportation. This tariff outlines all of the services and charges for the movers, and the Department of Transportation holds all movers in the state of Minnesota responsible for following by their published rates, policies, and procedures as set forth by the Department of Transportation.
Most movers in the Minnesota metro area and the 7 surrounding counties, (within a 60 mile radius) will charge an hourly rate, and usually outside of this area will be priced by weight and distance. By law they do have alternating rates, and if it is between weight and distance and hourly, it must be charged the lower of the 2. Local movers are required to have MINN/Dot # on the truck.
One important thing to remember is that you make sure your local mover carries workers compensation insurance and the proper licensing on equipment and vehicles.
